Dine Out in Downtown: Eat at the Historic Beekman

At One Manhattan Square, life unfolds high above the city in spaces surrounded by intentional comforts and architectural distinction. Beyond the Lower East Side, residents will find another kind of escape, where history, design, and chef-driven experiences converge. Among the neighborhood’s beloved landmarks, the Beekman rises with singular grace.

Completed in 1883, the Temple Court Building, now known as the Beekman, was one of New York’s earliest skyscrapers. Its nine-story atrium, framed by intricate wrought-iron railings and crowned by a pyramidal skylight, was designated a New York City landmark in June 2024. Recognized as one of the most exceptional 19th century interiors in Manhattan, it remains a rare surviving example of Gilded Age commercial design.

Stepping into the atrium is transformative. Vintage tilework and wood-paneled corridors open into a soaring space where light and vertical drama converge. The surrounding balconies curve in repetition, their filigree outlines catching and reflecting the daylight that filters from above. It’s a space designed to elevate not only the eye but also the mood: serene, stately, and full of visual rhythm.

When looking upward, the eye follows lines of Victorian ornamentation narrowing toward the faceted glass apex above, the crowning element that floods the space with daylight. Light and shadow move through the structure, casting layers of visual texture that shift with time and surface. Whether visiting for a cocktail, dinner, or simply to linger beneath the balconies, the atrium lends each experience a sense of occasion. This is a space that doesn’t just preserve the past — it animates it.

Nowhere is that more apparent than at its base, where the Bar Room offers a setting where conversation feels effortless and the surroundings do the talking. With live jazz on weekends and a curated menu of vintage-inspired cocktails, it’s a place to settle in, not pass through. Among the standouts is the Emily Roebling, a bold and elegant riff on a rye Manhattan. Named after the pioneering engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge, the drink blends Woodinville rye, Hennessy VSOP, Montenegro, and Maraschino into something structured and resonant, much like the room itself. Every visit here is defined as much by setting as by sip.

Adjacent to the atrium, Temple Court, under the direction of chef Tom Colicchio, merges culinary artistry with the architecture surrounding it. The room’s rich textures and warm lighting echo the building’s layered past, creating a space where time slows and details sharpen. Colicchio’s menu offers seasonal American fare with depth and restraint, anchored by thoughtful compositions like the pancetta-wrapped rabbit, served with fava beans, artichokes, and Sicilian pistachios. The dish balances rustic tradition and refined execution. A meal here feels intentional and unrushed, like a well-paced conversation.

Located on the same floor, just off the lobby, Le Gratin channels the ease of a brasserie, guided by chef Daniel Boulud’s Lyonnaise sensibility. Tiled floors, antique mirrors, and a low hum of energy set the tone for classic French dishes reimagined with subtle precision. The Gratin Dauphinois Comme Marie, inspired by a recipe from Boulud’s mother, Marie, is a signature dish. Often paired with seared veal sweetbreads or rotisserie chicken, it brings comfort and craft in equal measure. It’s a nod to his roots and a reminder that refinement and warmth can, and should, share the same table.

Together, these spaces mirror the architecture surrounding them: richly layered, beautifully composed, and quietly transporting. For residents of One Manhattan Square, the Beekman is a landmark that contributes to the neighborhood’s rhythm, where every visit invites pause, pleasure, and discovery.
