Essex Crossing Development: What Has Become of the LES Project?

The Essex Crossing development, also known as the Seward Park Extension Urban Renewal Area, sits on one of Manhattan’s largest city-owned stretches of undeveloped land. It is one of the most ambitious urban renewal projects in the city’s history. Located just a few blocks from the One Manhattan Square condos on the Lower East Side, this mixed-use development gained approval a decade ago and broke ground in 2015. Today, progress on this massive and hotly anticipated project — part of the broader 2,000,000-square-foot Seward Park Urban Renewal Area at Delancey and Essex Streets — has advanced, with updates in store for 2022.

Residents of Extell Development’s One Manhattan Square condos have their own virtual village, featuring 100,000 square feet of private indoor and outdoor amenities. With green spaces, including a sumac meander, relaxation lawns, firepits, birch garden, putting greens, and more, as well as entertainment facilities like a 70-seat movie theater, billiards room, spa, and sports club, residents can fulfill most every need and want within the One Manhattan Square community. But the Essex Crossing development promises a host of new offerings to build up and boost the Lower East Side.

The Market Line, which spans three city blocks, offers an indoor bazaar atmosphere geared toward the city’s foodies. You’ll find iconic shops, pop-ups, a food hall, restaurants, a natural wine shop and bar called Peoples (helmed by the Michelin-starred Contra team), as well as a paradise for beer lovers, The Grand Delancey, with 50 craft beers on tap. The Essex Market is home to 37 vendors, two restaurants, a demonstration kitchen used to host cooking shows and other educational programming, and, of course, a host of high-quality culinary items for sale — including meat, fish, cheese, prepared dishes, and other delectables to bring home for a fresh and tasty meal.
